I'm still working on this, to be honest. There are so many people in the world of Second Life and so much to do that it sometimes feels overwhelming when it comes to where and how to make friends.
The best advice I can give is to just, put yourself out there. Keep an open mind when visiting new locations and if you get a random PM then just answer it!
We were all new once, and as the time passes and you feel like you have had experiences under you belt, and maybe you have had unfortunate experiences with some people you've met, don't forget there are still great people out there too. I've had the pleasure of meeting a few really great people so far and look forward to possibly meeting more.
It can get lonely if you don't have something you love to do while in world. And having friends to talk to and share things with can be a big part of the reason why you'd even want to log in or not. So, just keep your mind open and be friendly and helpful when you can. I'm sure you are bound to run into someone that you enjoy being around and talking to!
